Sonora felt this because her father, William Jackson Smart, took care of his six children alone.

In 1910, Sunora took this idea and went to the pastor of the church and he supported Sunora’s idea on June 19, 1910, celebrating Father’s Day, celebrated Father’s Day everywhere. Sonora wanted Father’s Day to be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday, but the church pastor needed some time to organize, so Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19.
In 1913 Congress refused to recognize Father’s Day because they thought it would become just another holiday. The struggle to get Father’s Day recognized went on for many years. In 1966, during World War II, many families lost their fathers and they realized the father’s contribution, so in 1972, President Richard Nixon recognized it as a national holiday.
